The company achieved an overall ESG score of 71, reflecting its performance across environmental responsibility, social welfare and corporate governance.

The recognition highlights the insurer’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its business operations while strengthening stakeholder trust, managing risks and promoting responsible business practices. Its performance across the three ESG pillars indicates particular strengths in environmental stewardship and governance.

Strong Environmental Performance and Resource Efficiency

Canara HSBC Life Insurance scored 79 in the Environment category, with the assessment highlighting its performance on greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and waste management. According to the assessment, the company’s greenhouse gas emissions from direct operations and energy consumption are below industry averages. It also recorded significantly lower energy and waste intensity compared with its peers, alongside strong waste recycling and recovery practices.

These findings underline the importance of resource efficiency and environmental management in the financial services sector, where companies can reduce their operational footprint through improved energy use, waste reduction and sustainable workplace practices.

Employee Safety and Customer Welfare Drive Social Performance

In the Social category, Canara HSBC Life Insurance secured a score of 63. The assessment recognised the company’s focus on employee well-being, workplace safety and customer experience. The company reported a lost-time incident rate of zero and no employee fatalities during the assessment year. It also achieved 100% employee coverage under health and safety training, reflecting its emphasis on workplace safety and employee protection.

Women accounted for 36.69% of the company’s workforce, while customer complaint frequency remained below relevant benchmarks. These indicators highlight the role of employee welfare, workforce diversity and customer grievance management in assessing an organisation’s social performance.

Canara HSBC Life Insurance ESG Rating: Governance Framework Earns a Score of 75

The company achieved a score of 75 in Governance, with the assessment recognising its oversight mechanisms and corporate governance policies. Its governance framework includes Board independence levels exceeding regulatory requirements, strong independent representation across key Board committees, and comprehensive policies covering anti-corruption and sustainability governance.

Effective governance is an important factor for insurance companies, which manage long-term financial commitments and sensitive customer information. Strong oversight, transparent disclosures and risk management practices can help build confidence among policyholders, investors and other stakeholders.

ESG Integrated into Long-Term Business Strategy

Commenting on the recognition, Anuj Mathur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Canara HSBC Life Insurance, said the ‘Leader’ category recognition affirmed the company’s belief that sustainable growth and responsible business practices go hand in hand.
