A Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report runs to well over a hundred pages. Most of it is narrative. A small part of it is checked. Knowing which is which is the whole skill.
Start at the Core, not the beginning
BRSR Core carries nine attributes reduced to quantitative indicators, and for companies inside the assurance cohort these figures have been examined by somebody outside the company.
Everything else in the filing is management describing itself. That material is not worthless, but it carries the evidentiary weight of a brochure.
Read the assurance statement before the data
Three things matter in it. Who performed the work, since assessment may be done by consultancies and certification bodies as well as audit firms. What level of assurance was given, because limited assurance is a far weaker opinion than reasonable assurance. And what was excluded, since boundary exclusions are where inconvenient operations go.
A qualification or an excluded subsidiary tells you more than the entire environmental section.
Six checks that reward the effort
- Does the boundary include contractors? Safety and wage figures look very different depending on the answer, and contract labour is where Indian industrial risk concentrates.
- Do complaint numbers reconcile? Harassment complaints appear in the BRSR, the board report and the filing with the District Officer. They should match.
- Is water reported as withdrawal and consumption? Withdrawal alone hides how much is returned and in what condition.
- Has intensity improved while absolute figures rose? Growing companies often report both, and lead with the first.
- What is the wage disclosure against minimum wage? This is the inclusive development attribute and it is rarely discussed.
- What share of trade is with related parties? Filed under openness of business, and a useful governance signal.
What the filing will not tell you
Value chain data, because that disclosure is not mandatory. Most of Scope 3. And anything about facilities outside the reporting boundary. Absence in a BRSR is information, and it is the part readers most often skip.
