Mumbai – Colgate-Palmolive India reported reaching 11 million children and their families through oral health education in financial year 2025-26, across some 35,000 schools, in its Annual and ESG Report for the year.
The programme behind that figure, Bright Smiles Bright Futures, has run in India since 1991. The company puts cumulative reach since launch at 195 million children and families, covering brushing practice, nutrition and tobacco avoidance.
Screening at scale
A separate initiative, the Oral Health Movement, reported enabling more than 4.5 million people across 700 districts to access technology-supported oral health screening, using an artificial intelligence tool that generates a dental score and tailored guidance.
The company also reported roughly 300,000 beneficiaries through education and environmental sustainability programmes, alongside progress on renewable energy, water conservation and circular packaging.
How to read a reach number
Reach figures of this size deserve a specific kind of scrutiny, and it is not scepticism about whether the activity happened.
Reach counts exposure. A child who sat through a session in an assembly hall is one of the 11 million. That is a legitimate measure of programme scale and a weak measure of outcome. The question that matters for a brushing intervention is whether behaviour changed and held, and reach cannot answer it.
There is also an unavoidable adjacency. An oral health education programme run by a toothpaste manufacturer produces public health benefit and brand familiarity from the same activity. Both are real. Neither cancels the other, and the disclosure is more useful when it acknowledges the overlap than when it does not.
What BRSR Core would ask instead
None of these figures form part of BRSR Core. The assured attributes are quantitative and internal: emissions, water, energy, waste, safety, gender diversity, wages and related party transactions.
That is the useful distinction for any reader of an Indian ESG report. Community programme numbers are self-reported and unassured. Core environmental and workforce numbers are checked. The two sit in the same document and carry very different evidentiary weight.
