Mumbai – India Social Stock Exchange has registered roughly 176 non-profit organisations across the two exchanges. Eleven have actually raised money on it.

As of May 2026, 92 non-profits were registered on the BSE segment and 84 on the NSE. The conversion from registration to a live zero coupon zero principal issue is where the platform has struggled.

What the instrument is

A zero coupon zero principal instrument pays no interest and returns no principal. It is a donation routed through a securities structure, which brings the donation inside a disclosure regime: registration requirements, standardised reporting and a mandatory annual impact report.

The proposition is not financial return. It is verified accountability for philanthropic money, which Indian giving has historically lacked.

The 2026 reforms address the funnel

A SEBI circular of April 2026 extended registration validity to three years and cut the minimum subscription threshold for an issue to 50 per cent.

The subscription change is the more useful of the two. Requiring near-full subscription meant a non-profit could complete every compliance step and still raise nothing if the issue fell short, which is a powerful deterrent to trying.

The change that could actually move volume

A subscription now counts as eligible corporate social responsibility spending.

That connects a statutory pool of money to a regulated channel. A company discharging its CSR obligation through the exchange gets standardised impact reporting and SEBI oversight instead of conducting its own due diligence on implementation partners. For companies whose CSR spending is large and whose monitoring capacity is thin, that is a genuine simplification.

Whether corporate donors use it is the test the platform has not yet passed.
